Who are we? We are students and community members in Nakamichi-cho and Toyotomi-mura, in Yamanashi-ken, Japan who appreciate the land where we live and we want to improve it.

Chemistry group Computer Club English club
Spring 1997 volunteers at Tekinan Junior high school chemistry club; and 1998
volunteers at Nakamichi-Minami Primary School Earth Explorers' English Club; and Nakamichi-Kita Primary School Computer Club.

What do we do? So far, we make daily observations and graphs of our daily weather conditions and make maps of our local environment. We also check the water quality and life of our local rivers and compare the data with students other countries.

Why do we do it? We volunteer because no one else does it.  We also love the land and we know that it is connected to the world.

River Maps. In 1997, Yamanashi-ken began the River Network project to begin to digitalize maps and images of the Kofu Bonchi (basin) and streams. We include their map of the Fuefuki River and a map that we created for the streams in our towns, Nakamichi-cho and Toyotomi Mura.

Water Reports. Last year volunteers in the Chemistry club at Tekinan Junior High school made regular observations and readings of the pH and COD of the nearby Fuefuki river and steams flowing into it. One of the streams has origins in the mountains, so some students at Nakamichi-Minami Primary school checked the water there too. The report summarizes our findings.

Data/Graphs: Our current graph is just beginning for the 1998-99 school year.   We will include weather information and readings of the local streams and rivers' pH and COD.  We will use this information as a basis for participation in NASA's GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program.   We participate in this program through Japan's Department of the Environment Kodomo Eco-Club.
